Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet is offering a free dinner to all who attend Wednesday night's men's volleyball tournament title game. Erskine Head Coach Derek Schmitt is also encouraging all fans to wear "white" to show their support for the Flying Fleet.
#1 seed Erskine hosts #3 seed University of Mount Olive starting at 7:00 p.m. The Erskine Sports Information Department will be providing both
live stats and
video of the event.
The Flying Fleet (20-6, 12-2) advanced to the title game after beating #5 Barton College (12-17, 7-7) 3-0 last Saturday night in the semi-final round of the tournament. Sophomore
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) just missed a double-double with a game-high 18 kills and 9 digs. Middle hitters
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) and
Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R., Colegio San Ignalio) combined 17 kills on 31 attempts, 9 digs and 4 blocks.
The Trojans (15-11, 10-4) had a slightly harder route to the championship game. In the quarterfinals, the Trojans needed four sets to beat the #5 seed Lees-McRae College at home to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the Trojans shocked #2 Pfeiffer, winning in four sets 3 to 1. Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Angel Dache knocked down 24 kills on 45 attempts to power the Trojans to victory. Only teammate Garrett Dimm reached double-figures, finishing with 11 kills.
The two teams split their two regular season games. Erskine defeated UMO at home 3-1 back in January and UMO returned the favor, beating Erskine in five sets 3-2 in February. After that loss though, Erskine won their next twelve games in a row and seventeen of their last eighteen games.
Dinner will be provided by Erskine's food service provider, Aramark, from 6:45 and 7:30 p.m.
