Erskine loses 7-2 to King

Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (1-8, 1-3) lost to Tornado of King University (5-7, 2-2) 7 to 2 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.

The match began well for the Flying Fleet with two wins in the doubles matches.  Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) triumphed 8-4 at #1 doubles while teammates Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) won a marathon match 9 to 8 at #3 doubles.

Unfortunately the Flying Fleet lost all six singles matches.  The Fleet had opportunities to win three matches but dropped all three in the third set.  After losing his first set, Mathewes rebounded to win the second set but lost his third set 6-2.  West also went three sets, capturing the second set on a tie-breaker, but lost his third set by the same score of 6-2.  Jason Harris engaged in the longest match of the day.  After splitting the first two sets by the same score of 7 to 5, Harris was forced to retire due to injury in the third set with it tied 5 to 5.

Erskine travels to Augusta, Georgia, on Tuesday to face Georgia Regents University.  Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
