Box Score Due West, S.C. – Playing in front of a "blackout" crowd, the Erskine Flying Fleet (11-7, 7-1) slayed the Saints of Limestone College 3 to 1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20) tonight in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at Belk Arena.
After splitting the first two matches, Erskine found their offensive stride in the last two sets. With the scored tied 5 to 5 in the third set, the Flying Fleet scored five unanswered points on three kills, two by
Andres Talavera (Bayamon, P.R., Academia Discipulos de Crista), to grab a lead they would never relinquish. The Saints never drew closer than five points after that as the Fleet won the third set 25 to 19.
Erskine overcame an early three point deficit in the fourth set to eventually take a three point lead at 20 to 17 on a kill by setter
Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School), who tapped the ball over the net catching the Saint defense by surprise. Erskine added two more points to their lead and won the decisive set 25 to 20.
Sophomore outside hitter
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) had another tremendous game for the Fleet, knocking down a game-high 21 kills along with 9 digs and 3 blocks. Fellow sophomore
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) contributed 11 kills and had a co-game-high 6 blocks.
For the Saints, Eric Zaun had a team-high 18 kills. Teammate Curis Van Grinsven had a game-high 8 blocks.
Erskine has now won their last seven games in a row, the longest streak in the program's history.
Erskine fans were encouraged to wear black to "blackout" Belk Arena. A black cheesecake was given away during the game as part of the promotion.
The Flying Fleet host conference foe Lees-McRae this Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
