Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (16-6) rallied from a 2 to 1 deficit to beat the Cobras of Coker College (8-19) 3 to 2 (25-13, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14) tonight in non-conference men's volleyball action at Belk Arena.
After breezing to a 25 to 13 win in the first set, Erskine dropped the next two sets 25 to 23 and 25 to 22). In the second set, Erskine trailed by as many as seven to pull within a point at 24 to 23. But a Fleet service error on set point gave the set to the Cobras.
In the next set, Erskine could not grab the lead despite trailing by no more than three points at any point in the set. With the set tied 21 to 21, Erskine committed three consecutive errors giving Coker the opportunity to win the set on a kill by Luke Hansen. Hansen finished with a team-high 13 kills.
Coker appeared to be on their way to winning match, leaping out to an early five point. Erskine fought back, overcoming the early deficit to tie the game at 15 to 15. After swapping three points apiece, Erskine snapped the tie with a 5-1 run to win the set and force the fifth decisive set.
The fifth set was not decided until the last two points. With the set tied at 14 to 14, Erskine caught a break on a ball handling error by Coker and sophomore
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) blistered a kill for the game-winning point.
Michelau and
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) led the Fleet with a game-high 18 kills while
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) notched his first double-double of the season with 17 kills and a game-high 13 digs.
Erskine now turns their attention to clinching their first regular season conference title. Erskine closes out their season playing their last three games on the road. Up first the Flying Fleet will travel to Belmont, North Carolina, on Tuesday to play the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
