Burns scores 7 goals in Erskine's win over Shorter

Box Score Rome, Ga. – With less than fourteen minutes remaining,  Erskine (6-4) scored three goals in less than four minutes and held on to defeat Shorter University (3-7) 14 to 13 this evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Ben Brady Field.

Early in the second period, Erskine broke an 8-8 tie by scoring three unanswered goals to take the largest lead of the game.  Junior attacker Samantha Burns bookended the run while freshman Cory Hunteman scored on an assist from fellow freshman Ali Cole.

Shorter took advantage of three Erskine penalties to tally two free position goals and a man-up goal to pull even at 11 to 11.

After swapping a goal each, Burns scored her sixth and seventh goals of the game to put the Fleet up by two with a little over ten minutes to play.

Erskine goalkeeper Konstandena Brown stopped a flurry of shots in the final minutes, including four free position shots to preserve the victory.  Brown finished with 9 saves on 26 shots.

Samantha Burns tied her own school record with 7 goals in the game.  It is the second time this season she has scored 7 goals and the third time in her career.

Freshman Ali Cole tallied 5 goals and an assist while Cory Hunteman and Kelly Dalziel each a goal each.

With six wins, Erskine has tied their record for most wins in a season set last season.

The Fleet will look to set a new single season wins record this Saturday against conference foe Belmont Abbey College.  Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
