Erskine Men's Volleyball Enters Stretch Run for Title

Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (15-5, 9-1) are entering the stretch run for their first-ever regular season championship and the #1 seed in the upcoming conference championship tournament.

With a two-game lead over the University of Mount Olive, Erskine has five more games remaining, including four conference matches.  This Tuesday night Erskine can secure one of the two top seeds and a first round bye in the tournament with a win at home against Pfeiffer University.  The game starts at 7:00 p.m.

It has been over a week since the Fleet last took to the court.  Last weekend the Flying Fleet travelled to California to play Hope International University and California Baptist College.  Erskine won both matches in five sets, coming back both times from a 2-1 deficit.

Freshman Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) distinguished himself on the road trip earning his first collegiate double-double Friday night against Hope International with 19 kills and 10 digs.  On Saturday, Vargas tied a career-high from earlier that week with 20 kills against California Baptist.  For his efforts, Vargas earned Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and was selected as the National Freshman of the Week by Off the Block.

Not to go unnoticed is the stellar play of Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R., Colegio San Ignalio).  More known for his strong defense as a middle blocker, the 6'4 sophomore has knocked down double-digit kills in his last three games, helping the Fleet to their program-best 11 game win streak.

Pfeiffer (9-11, 6-4) snapped a three-game losing skid by topping conference foe King University 3-1 last Wednesday.

Pfeiffer brings a crushing offense into Belk Arena.  Second only to the Fleet in kills per set, Pfeiffer has six players averaging 2 kills or better per set on the season.  Sonny Hirini leads the Falcons averaging 3.19 kills per set while teammate Michael Brewer is not far behind averaging 3 kills per set.

Admission is free to all home Erskine Men's Volleyball games.  Fans unable to attend in person may follow the game on the web via live stats and/or video.
