Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (1-10) narrowly upset local in-state foe Newberry College (6-4) losing 5 to 4 in non-conference men's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.
After losing at #2 and #3 doubles, Erskine savaged a point at #1 doubles when senior
Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and junior
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) edged Vinicius Botehello and Mohammed Chakir 8 to 6.
Erskine split the six singles matches with Newberry with all six matches decided in straight sets. Mathewes,
Andre Andre (Setubal, Portugal) and
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) triumphed for the Flying Fleet.
Erskine was missing their #1 singles and doubles player
Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) who missed today's match due to an injury incurred in yesterday's match.
Erskine leaves tomorrow for Hilton Head Island where they will play four teams in the next five days.
