Erskine wins two at Coker Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hartsville, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet ran their streak to six games winning a pair of games in the Coker College Invitational Tournament this Saturday in non-conference men's volleyball action at Timberlake Lawton Gym.

Game One

In their first game, Erskine beat Sacred Heart University in three sets, winning all three sets by just two points.  With the game tied 22 to 22 in the first set, Erskine won three of the next four points to win the set 25 to 23.  Sophomore Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) knocked down two kills, including the game point, to secure the first set for the Fleet.

Trailing 23 to 22 in the second set, Erskine again turned to their  leading scorer Michelau, who delivered again with a kill and a service ace.  Following a kill by Sacred Heart, sophomore Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) scored the game point, blocking Enzo Mackenzie, for the victory.

Leading by three in the third set, Erskine had to fight off a late charge by Sacred Heart to win the set 26 to 24.  Sacred Heart got two kills then scored a point off a Fleet attack error to tie the game at 24 to 24  Kawa put the Fleet up by one then a Sacred Heart attack error gave the Fleet the straight set victory.

Kawa and Michelau finished with 13 and 11 kills respectively.  Setter Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School) had another quality game, handing out 35 assists while also recording 3 kills and 6 digs. 

Game Two

In their second game, Erskine defeated host Coker College in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-23) for their tenth win of the season.

Offensively Erskine churned out 36 kills with a .338 hitting percentage while defensively the Fleet held Coker to 26 kills, including just 12 total kills in the first two sets.

Marks again direct the Fleet offense, handing out 33 assists with a team-high 6 digs.  Freshman Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) was his favorite target in game two, who finished with a game-high 13 kills on a .333 hitting percentage.  Neal Stanley (Apopka, FL, Apopka High School) contributed 8 kills.

Erskine returns home to host conference foe Limestone College this Tuesday.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
