Limestone barely survives Erskine's upset bid

Box Score Gaffney, S.C. – With the clock winding down, Erskine's Roderick Perkins' final shot rolled off the rim as time expired, allowing #4 Limestone College Saints to avoid #5 Erskine Flying Fleet upset bid 45 to 44 in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship Powered by OrthoCarolina at the Timkin Center.

In an exciting tournament game, the largest lead held by both teams was seven points. In the first half, Limestone overcame an early seven point lead to garner a four point lead at 21 to 17  by intermission.

Likewise the Flying Fleet found themselves down by seven in the second half but used a 10-1 run to retake the lead.  Senior Jake Haslam (Lithia, FL, Tampa Preparatory School) started the run with a 3-point basket and Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) contributed five points, including a 3-point basket to cap the run, off two nice passes from point guard Justin Cofer (Evans, GA, Greenbrier High School).

Erskine held the lead until the final minute when Jamal McNeil laid the ball in with 29 seconds remaining to take a 45 to 44 lead.

Perkins led the Fleet with 18 points while senior post player Chris Gore (Myrtle Beach, SC, Myrtle Beach High School) capped off this career with his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Saints were led by P.J. Foster's 18 points.

Erskine concludes their season at 15-12 overall.  It is the first time since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 1995 that Erskine has posted back-to-back winning seasons.  It also marks the first time in 34 years that both the men and women's basketball teams finish with winning seasons.
