Box Score Loretto, Pa. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (3-4) put a scare into St. Francis (5-3), winning one set before falling 3 to 1 in non-conference men's volleyball action at DeGol Arena.
After losing the first two sets, Erskine won the third set 25 to 17 and narrowly sent it to a decisive fifth set, losing the fourth set late 25 to 21.
In the third set, the Fleet led from start to finish.
Andres Talavera (Bayamon, P.R., Academia Discipulos de Crista) sparked the Fleet, scoring three of the Fleet's first four points. Talavera would finish with 6 kills on the night. Sophomore
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) also had five of his eleven kills in the set as the Fleet won convincingly 25 to 17.
The outcome of the fourth set remained in doubt until late in the set. With Erskine trailing by one at 18 to 17, St. Francis scored the next three points. Erskine pulled back within two points but St. Francis edged Erskine 25 to 21 to win the game.
Freshman
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) led the Fleet with a game-high 16 kills while Michelau finished with 11 kills. Setter
Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School) continued his stellar play, recording 42 assists on the night.
For St. Francis, Kyle Beatty knocked down 14 kills and had a game-high 13 digs. Teammate Logan Patterson had 11 kills.
As a team, St. Francis had 12 blocks on the night. Mike Marshman and Mike Kresch combined for 8 blocks together.
Erskine travels to Pfeiffer University this Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
