Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) knocked down a game-high 16 kills as the Erskine Flying Fleet (8-5, 6-1) blasted past the Tornado of King University 3 to 0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) this evening in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at Belk Arena.
All three sets were close. In each set, Erskine managed to put together a short run that proved to be the difference each time. In the first set, Erskine scored three consecutive points to take an 18 to 15 lead on a kill by
Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School) and two miscues by King. Again in the second set, Erskine snagged an early three point lead following a kill by Vargas and maintained the lead to win the second set 25 to 20. In the final third set, Erskine overcame a three point deficit at 17 to 20 to win the set 25 to 23.
In addition to Vargas' 16 kills, Erskine had three other players finish with 9 kills, resulting in a .359 hitting percentage on the night. Marks handed out a season-best 47 assists in a three set match.
King was led by Eddie Moushikhian's 11 kills, 6 digs and 2 blocks.
Erskine plays in the Coker Invitational Tournament tomorrow. The Fleet will play Sacred Heart University at 4:30 followed by Coker College at 6:30 p.m. Both games may be followed via live stats.
