Due West, S.C. – Playing at home for the first time this season, Erskine lost to USC-Aiken 6 to 3 this afternoon in non-conference men's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.
The Flying Fleet opened the match winning two of the three doubles matches but failed to take the keep the momentum rolling into singles play.
Erskine won two of their three points at #1 and #3 doubles. Erskine's
Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) outlasted Patrick Stiebinger and Alendro 8 to 4 at the top spot and
Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) won by a similar score at #3 doubles.
Despite the success in doubles play, Erskine could not sustain it through the six singles matches. Mathewes tallied the Fleet's lone point in singles play winning in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4. West won a hard fought first set 7-6 but was edged in the next two sets.
The Fleet will now turn their attention to Saturday when the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College visit Due West.
