Box Score Hartsville, S.C. – The Erskine Lacrosse Team opened their 2014 campaign with a 15 to 11 win over the Cobras of Coker College this afternoon.
After surrendering the game's first goal in the first minute of play, Erskine rattled off four unanswered goals to take a lead they would never relinquish. Twenty seconds after surrendering the goal to Coker, junior
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) recorded the Fleet's first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. She would cap the rally with her second of six goals. Freshmen
Cory Hunteman (Annapolis, MD, Broadneck Senior High School) and
Ali Cole (Duluth, GA, Duluth High School) tallied their first collegiate goals between Burns' two goals.
Erskine extended their lead to seven by intermission at 11 to 4.
In the second half, Erskine worked the clock and played their bench. Coker never seriously threatened as the closest Coker got was the final score of 15 to 11.
Six players recorded a goal for the Flying Fleet, led by Burns' six goals. Cole finished with four goals in her first collegiate game.
For the Cobras, Danielle Holcomb and Hayley Ferone had three goals and an assist each.
Erskine will travel to Rome, Georgia, on Wednesday to play Shorter College.
