Due West, S.C. – Entering the stretch run, the Erskine Women's Basketball Team (12-9, 7-6) faces a tough road test in the University of Mount Olive Trojans (14-7, 9-4) this Saturday. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
The Mount Olive Sports Information Department will be providing
live video and
live stats of the contest.
With a win tomorrow afternoon, Erskine will clinch a spot in the upcoming conference tournament and take a big step toward hosting in the opening round.
Last time these two squads met was back on January 15
th with the Fleet edging the Trojans at home 57 to 56. Erskine's
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) hit a contested layup with 17 seconds remaining and the Mount Olive's last shot rolled off the rim as time expired.
Since that game though, the Trojans have gone an impressive 5-1, winning their last five games in a row, while the Fleet have gone 3-4, including dropping their last two games.
The matchup will pit Erskine's offense against Mount Olive's defense. The Flying Fleet are second in the league in points scored, averaging just South of 73 points per game. Mount Olive, on the other hand, enters with the conference's stingiest defense, allowing just 58.8 points per game.
The Flying Fleet are led in scoring by the freshmen backcourt tandem of Hendrix and
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School). Up front junior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) and freshman
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) are a force on the boards, plus Potter has demonstrated the ability to put up big points.
The Trojans are an experienced team with four starting seniors and a junior. Even their "sixth man" is a senior with plenty of playing experience. Senior Katie Paschel leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game, fourth best in Conference Carolinas right now. Shooting guard Joneiqua Gary can stretch a defense with her long-range ability and averages 13.9 points per game. In the front court, Jasmine McDonald averages a double-double of 11.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
