Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet remained perfect in conference play, thumping the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-19) in men's volleyball action at Belk Arena.
Sophomore
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) led the Fleet's offensive charge, knocking down 16 kills along with 3 service aces and 4 blocks. Fellow sophomore
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. He also had 3 blocks and 2 aces. Setter
Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School) continued his amazing play handing out 44 assists this afternoon.
The Crusaders (1-5, 1-2) were led by John Lowenhagen's 8 kills and 7 digs. Libero Johnny Gomez had a game-high 14 digs.
Erskine (3-2, 3-0) struggled to find offensive consistency in the first set, falling behind 21 to 14 at one point. Erskine contributed to the Abbey's 6 point run by committing three errors, two on attack and one service error.
The Flying Fleet stormed back into the game, knocking down three consecutive kills, two by Kawa and the other by
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy).
After exchanging several points, Erskine prevailed 26 to 24 on a kill by Perez.
With the momentum firmly in hand, Erskine won the next two sets by the same score of 25 to 19. Belmont Abbey never threatened in either set as the Fleet held them to just a .143 and -.052 hitting percentage respectively.
Erskine will travel to Pennsylvania next weekend to play Penn State University and St. Francis University.
