DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Erskine Flying Fleet (4-5) past the Catawba College Indians (5-5) 83 to 78 this afternoon in non-conference men's basketball action at Belk Arena. For the Flying Fleet, they have now won three of their last four games, including their last three home games.
The Fleet opened the game with a 10-5 run to grab an early lead. Sophomore
Maurice Daniels, Jr. (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School) led off the game with nice penetrating drive for the game's first basket. Freshman center
Ray Lock (Aiken, SC, Oak Hill Academy) capped off the run with a three-point basket and two free throws. Lock finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds.
Catawba overcame the early deficit by jumping into a full court press, capitalizing on three consecutive Fleet turnovers to tie the game at 16-16. Two minutes later the Indians grabbed their first lead of the game on a three-point basket by Ben Sealey.
After a couple of lead changes, Erskine scored seven unanswered points, highlighted by a three point basket and two free throws by sophomore guard
Arvel Atwater, Jr. (Capitol Heights, MD, Suitland High School), to recapture the lead. Catawba scored the half's final two baskets to trim the Erskine lead to 42 to 40 at intermission.
Coming out of the locker room, Catawba began the second period with a 10-4 to take their largest lead of the game at 50 to 46. The Catawba run was bookend by two three-point baskets. Reggie Perkins opened the second half with his second three point basket of the game while Jerrin Morrison nailed his only deep ball to put the Indians up by four.
Erskine secured the lead for good with just under four minutes remaining. With the score tied at 66-66, Erskine's
Fineto Lungwana (Roswell, GA, Centennial High School) hit a mid-range jumper and sophomore
Aaron Brown (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) followed with three-pointer to put the Fleet up by five. Lungwana contributed 12 points off the bench while Brown scored 6 points.
Catawba closed to within two points with fourteen seconds remaining after Rakeen Brown drew a foul behind the arc and converted all three free throws. With Catawba forced to foul, the Fleet converted three of four free throws to win the game 83 to 78.
Catawba had four players finish in double-figures, led by Rakeen Brown's 17 points.
Erskine will play two games at home this weekend. The Flying Fleet welcome the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey on Friday and host the Pfeiffer University Falcons on Saturday. Game time for both games is 7:30 p.m.
