Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine (2-2) failed to upset #11 ranked Limestone College Saints (2-1) as a last second jumper ended with a toilet bowl rim out, giving Limestone the 64 to 63 win at Belk Arena in women's basketball action.
Limestone hit a jump shot with seven seconds left on the clock to take the lead over the Fleet at 64 to 63. Erskine's
Haleigh Spaulding (Ocala, FL, Vanguard High School) received the inbound pass and rushed down the court for the final second desperation shot by teammate
Andrienne Bannerman (Wilmington, NC, Pender High School) that swirled around the rim before falling off.
The Fleet were down eleven with 13 minutes left in the second half when Erskine Head Coach Russ Greg called a timeout. After that timeout, Erskine had a new fire burning within them and eventually tied the game with a three point shot from Kristen Giles with four minutes remaining.
After the game, Coach Greghad told his team, "We can compete with this team, we were a little timid early so let's get out there and get after them." He was pleased with his team's effort today and said that they all stepped up and listened to him and got dialed in.
During Erskine's scoring run, Bannerman and senior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) made crucial back to back baskets and a few defensive stops gave Erskine the sense of confidence and urgency they needed.
Coach Greg said that his team had played a lot this week and that having Bannerman and
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) back helped tremendously. He also said that Spaulding came in and did a great job for point guard
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) who is out due to illness. Spaulding had five assists and just one turnover.
Bannerman tallied a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds while
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School), who hit several crucial shots, scored 17 points.
Limestone's Jasmine Kearse led all-scorers with 23 points and teammate Alicia Brookins had 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Fleet face off against local rival Lander University in Greenwood this Saturday.
