Due West, S.C. – After back-to-back winning seasons, Head Men's Basketball Coach Mark Peeler has his work cut out for a third winning season as he needs to replace a full starting five this season.
Fortunately Coach Peeler welcomes back a core group that logged significant minutes last season as well as the return of guard
DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School). Hall missed last season due to injury suffered right before last year's first game.
Four players return who played in 19 or more games last year, led by sophomore
Brandon Wilkerson (Summerville, SC, Summerville High School). Wilkerson appeared in all but two games last year while averaging 3.8 points per game. The 6'4 wing player has the potential to be duo scoring threat with the size and quickness to penetrate the lane but also the long-range shooting ability.
Erskine also returns two players with experience at the point guard position. Senior
Justin Cofer (Evans, GA, Greenbrier High School) appeared in 25 games last year, shooting over 35% from the floor while averaging 2.0 assists per game. Sophomore
Maurice Daniels, Jr. (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School) had worked his way into the guard rotation by mid-season, playing over 15 minutes per game. Unfortunately a nagging leg injury limited his minutes down the stretch.
Senior
George Wood (Atlanta, GA, Druid Hills High School), who transferred to Erskine last year, appeared in 26 of the Fleet's 27 games. Wood, who had off-season shoulder surgery, is back to hundred percent and should improve on last year's numbers.
DeShaun Hall also returns this season after missing last year due to an injury. Two years ago Hall averaged over 14 points per game while shooting 49% from the floor, including 37% from beyond the arc. Hall is back to full strength and will provide much needed experience to the Flying Fleet.
The Flying Fleet welcome a slew of new faces to this year's squad. While no one has yet to emerge, Coach Peeler is encouraged by the depth of talent. In the early stages, Fleet fans should expect to see more players in the line-up.
