Box Score Due West, S.C. – Playing their first game in almost a month, Erskine (7-4, 2-1) showed no ill-effects pounding in-state conference foe North Greenville University (7-4, 2-1) 83 to 70 this afternoon in men's basketball action at Belk Arena.
With less than three minutes remaining in the opening period, Erskine picked up the tempo to outscore NGU 13 to 5 to take a 40 to 33 lead into the locker room at halftime. Sophomore
Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) and senior
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) led the charge scoring 7 and 6 points respectively.
The Crusaders crawled back to within two points early in the second half after a basket by Phillip Brown and two free throws by Keith Johnson but never seriously threatened after that as the Fleet pushed their lead to double-digits.
Perkins led the Fleet with a game-high 36 points, the fourth time this season the sophomore wing player has scored 30 or more points in a game. Gabbard went 15 of 16 from the charity stripe in route to a season-high 21 points. Senior
Chris Gore (Myrtle Beach, SC, Myrtle Beach High School) led Erskine in the battle on the boards grabbing a season-high 17 rebounds while scoring 10 points.
For the Crusaders, Brown turned in another double-double, scoring 14 points along with a game-high 20 rebounds. Johnson led the Crusaders with 15 points.
Erskine returns to the hardwood on Wednesday to play the Bobcats of Lees-McRae. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
