Box Score Belmont, N.C. – Despite a career-high 35 points by freshman
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School), the Erskine Flying Fleet fell to the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey 93 to 82 tonight in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at the Wheeler Center.
Trailing by eleven at halftime, Erskine slowly whittled away at the Abbey lead to eventually take a one point lead at 63 to 62 on two free throws by Hendrix. The lead would exchange hands three more times until the Abbey scored seven unanswered points with three minutes remaining to take a five point lead at 80 to 75. The Abbey went a perfect 10 for 10 from the line down the stretch to secure the eleven point win.
Hendrix went 10 for 20 from the field, including 11 of 16 from behind the arc, in scoring the most points since 2008 when Porsha Morgan scored a school record 38 points against Barton College.
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) also reached double-figures, scoring 18 points. Junior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) and freshman
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds each.
The Crusaders had four players reach double-figures, led by McKenzie Owen's 30 points and 9 rebounds. Morgan Midkiff added 20 points and 5 assists while Kelsey Long had 12 points. Tajanna Brown came off the bench to contributed 11 points.
With the loss, Erskine slips to 11-7 overall and 6-4 conference while the Abbey climbs to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in conference.
Erskine travels to Converse College this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
