Box Score Due West, S.C. – As time expired junior guard
Haleigh Spaulding (Ocala, FL, Vanguard High School) completed a fast break to give the Erskine Flying Fleet a 63 to 61 victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Barton College in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at Belk Arena.
With five seconds remaining and the game tied, the officials called Erskine for a foul sending the conference's leading scorer Nyeshea Willie to the line for a one and one. Erskine Head Coach Russ Gregg vehemently argued the call earning a technical foul giving Willie an additional two free throws. Shockingly Willie missed all three free throws. On the third miss, Erskine took the rebound and pushed it up the court. Adding to the craziness, Spaulding beat Barton down the court for the game-winning layup as the buzzer sounded.
With the win, Erskine improves to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in conference. Barton slips to 8-9 overall and 5-4 in conference.
Erskine had three players finish in double-figures, led by freshman Kristin Giles' 18 points. Freshman
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) contributed 16 points along with 5 assists and 3 steals while teammate
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Senior post player
Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) came off the bench to lead the Fleet on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had 8 points.
For Barton, Willie finished with a game-high 32 points. Tiffany Webster was the only other Barton player to reach double figures with 12 points.
Erskine plays their next three games on the road starting with the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey this Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
