Women's XC opens with 3rd place finish at Gamecock Invitational

Columbia, SC – Junior Marlee Rhodes (Williamston, SC, Palmetto High School) finished in seventh in leading the Erskine Flying Fleet to a 3rd place finish in the Gamecock Cross Country Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina late this afternoon.

Rhodes ran a career-best 20:06 to pace the Fleet in the 5k race.  Sophomore Amelia Chassevent (Fountain Inn, SC, Insights on Education) was not far behind finishing in 17th place with a time of 21:32. Chassevent was followed closely by the Fleet's next three runners, senior Rachel Whitmire (Pendleton, SC, T.L. Hanna High School), junior Chelsea Ball (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School), and sophomore April Bussey (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School), who finished 22nd, 23rd and 26th respectively.  Newcomers Ana Unda (Hendersonville, NC, Hendersonville Christian Academy) and Kaitlin Hoffman (Gastonia, NC, Forestview High School) finished in 33rd and 35th place overall.

Host USC won the event, led by Anna Todd's first place finish of 19:04.06, while the Savannah School of Art and Design finished second.

The Fleet will race again in two weeks at the Winthrop Open on September 21st.
