DUE WEST- The Erskine Flying Fleet Hall of Fame will add six new members at the 2013 induction ceremony to be held Saturday, October 26th as part of Erskine's Homecoming activities. Former Erskine Athletic Director Chip Sherer '89 highlights a quality field of inductees which includes Jeff Wiersma '03, Blake Moore '95, Casey Smith '08, Chrissy Taylor Fleming '06, and Aramark General Manager Randy Moore. The induction will take place at 10:30 am on the 26th with a brunch in Moffatt Dining Hall.
Chip Sherer '89 was a standout on the Erskine basketball team in the late 80's while also playing on the Erskine golf team. Sherer is only one of two Erskine basketball players (Brandon Wright '10) in the past thirty years to average 20 points a contest for a season. Following graduation from UNC-Chapel Hill graduate school, Sherer served as the school's first and only full-time athletic director before leaving Erskine in 2004.
Jeff Wiersma '03 graduated from Erskine as one of only two men's basketball players to score over 1000 points and grab over a 1000 rebounds. Wiersma's remarkable senior campaign was highlighted by Erskine's 2003 quarterfinal upset win over #2 nationally ranked Queens University in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament. Queens went on to play in the national semi-finals in 2003. Wiersma was the 2003 Jake Todd Award winner.
Blake Moore '95 earned his spot in the Flying Fleet Hall of Fame with a stellar golf career. Moore becomes only the 2nd golfer to enter the Hall of Fame, following Bob Thompson in 2007. Moore was the 1995 Jake Todd Award winner.
Chrissy Taylor Fleming '06 becomes only the second women's tennis player inducted into the Hall of Fame and the first in over 25 years. Mary Ann Devlin Sunbury was inducted in 1988 as the first women's tennis player. Taylor Fleming was at the starting point of Erskine's conference dynasty in tennis. She led the Fleet to conference titles in 2005 and 2006 beginning a streak of conference championships that currently stands at 9. She is the 2006 Jake Todd Award winner.
Casey Smith '08 set a new standard for Erskine baseball. In 2005, the Marietta, Georgia native was named Conference Carolinas "Athlete of the Year," Southeast Region "Player of the Year," NCAA Division II All-American, and NCAA Division II "Player of the Year." Smith was drafted in the 9th round in 2005 by the San Diego Padres.
Aramark General Manager Randy Moore will be inducted in special category thanks to his huge impact on Erskine Athletics the past 15 years. Moore has been the Fleet's #1 fan and supporter.
