HOW IT HAPPENED
After advancing through the play-in round in convincing fashion yesterday, the Fleet offense picked up right where they left off, with
Drew Potts starting the game with a leadoff home run.
Ricky Dober added a two-run blast a few batters later, and
Carson Yates and
Mason McManus each deposited a big fly in the second inning, as Erskine slugged its way to a 6-0 lead after the first two frames. However, the best-scoring offense in the country in Francis Marion got going in the third inning, totaling eight runs to suddenly put the Fleet behind, 8-6.
Jared Guell and
Kyle Knoll performed well out of the bullpen over the next four innings to hold down the Patriots offense, but the Fleet struggled to recreate their early magic.
Noah Hill's RBI double in the sixth got Erskine within a run, but the Fleet were never able to draw level, and FMU added three insurance runs in the eighth for a final score of 11-7, sending the Fleet into the loser's bracket.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine and the No. 6Â seed University of Mount Olive (28-20, 20-12 CC) will meet in an elimination game at the conference tournament's alternate site, Sims Legion Park, on Friday at 1 p.m.
