Erskine Sweeps Lake Erie

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet swept a non conference double header from Lake Erie College winning 5-3 and 3-1 Monday afternoon at Grier Field. 

Game One

Erskine (13-6) would take the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) singled and then scored on a double by Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS).  The Strom (0-5) would tie the game at one in the top of the third on a solo home run by Dylan Yankle.  The Fleet would answer in the bottom half of the inning when Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) drew a walk and advanced to third on a single by Cody Spence (Belton, SC, Belton-Honea Path HS).  Willingham would step to the plate and hit a single through the left side of the infield to score Corn and give Erskine the lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Tyler Kmitt would draw a leadoff walk and later score on a single by Zach DeCamp to tie the game once again.  Erskine would again answer the Storm in the bottom half of the inning.  Spence would single with one out and then advance to third on a single by Galliher.  Willingham would step up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in his third run of the game.  The Fleet would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) and Corn.

Willingham continued swinging a hot bat going 2-2 with a double and three RBI’s, while Galliher and Spence both added two hits.  Kit Carter (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (3-0) picked up the win allowing one run on two hits and striking out three in 2.1 innings of relief work.

Game Two

Erskine once again got the early lead when Corn led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run down the right field line.  The Storm would tie the game up in the fourth when DeCamp reached on an error and then scored on a double by Patrick Kilway.  The score would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth, when Corn again led off the inning with a solo home run.  Spence would follow with a single and then later score on a Lake Erie error to give Erskine an insurance run.

Corn led the Fleet at the plate going 2-3 with two home runs and two runs driven in, while Austin Gambrell (Belton, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College) was 3-3 and Spence added two more hits.  Zach McAllister (2-2) picked up the win pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief work.

The Fleet will return to action Wednesday when they host local rival Lander University at 2:00 pm.
