Erskine rallies to beat BAC 3-2

Box Score Belmont, N.C. – Erskine overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-8) in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action at the Wheeler Center. 

The win moves the Flying Fleet (13-12, 9-6) into a tie for 3rd place with Lees-McRae College with one conference game remaining for both teams.  Limestone College is a half a game back in 4th place at 9-7.

After dropping the first two games, Erskine was one point from being swept in three games by Belmont Abbey.  Freshman Mike Michelau (Bristol, WI, Westosha Central High School) smashed a hard kill to pull the Fleet within one then Erskine defense forced the Abbey into back-to-back attack errors to take a one point lead.  Freshman Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School)knocked down the game winner and the Fleet won the next two games to win the match 3-2.

Michelau finished with a career-high 28 kills with 9 digs.  Kawa earned his second “double-double” of the season with 19 kills and 11 digs while adding 5 blocks.  Freshman setterCorey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School)also earned a “double-double” with a career-best 60 assists and 10 digs.  Freshman Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R.) also contributed 15 kills.

The Abbey was led by Nolan Albrecht’s 19 kills while Evan Young and Griffin O’Camb had 12 and 10 kills respectively.  Aaron DeKalb finished with a game-high 15 digs.

Erskine travels to Massachusetts tomorrow to play Sacred Heart University on Thursday followed by a trip over to Cambridge to play Harvard University.
