Men's Tennis wins two this weekend

Due West, S.C. – Erskine ran their win streak to four matches with two wins this weekend over conference foes King University and Lees-McRae College.  On Friday, the Flying Fleet edged the Tornado 5-4 and followed it up on Saturday with a convincing 8-1 victory over the Bobcats.

Against King, the two teams split the first two doubles matches.  King won at #1 doubles 8-5 while Erskine took the #3 doubles match 8-4.   Erskine freshmen Dean Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) prevailed 9-8 (7-5) over King’s Leonardo Brigato and Patrick Jones to give the Fleet the 2 to 1 lead going into the singles matches.

The two teams split the six singles with three of the matches going three sets.  Erskine succeeded in winning two of those three matches to win the overall match 5 to 4.  Both Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) and Pearce won their matches in the third set while Aaron Twitty (West Columbia, SC, USC-Lancaster) dropped his match.  Harris won the third singles match for the Fleet, winning in straight sets.

The next day Erskine crushed Lees-McRae 8 to 1 to even their overall record at 5-5 and improve to 4-1 in conference play.  The only match the Fleet dropped was at #2 doubles.  Erskine won five of the six singles matches in straight sets.  Pearce needed a third set after losing his second set.

Erskine was originally scheduled to play Georgia State today at 2:30 p.m. but the match needed to be postponed due to the impending rain coming into the area this afternoon.  The Fleet will need to wait until tomorrow to try to extend their win streak to five matches.  The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
