Box Score Banner Elk, N.C. – Erskine earned their first conference victory of the season today topping the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College 13-11 in women’s lacrosse action at Tate Field.
After grabbing an early 2-0, Erskine (4-7, 1-5) scored a late goal to take a 6-5 lead into the locker room at intermission. Sophomore
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) set up the Fleet’s first two goals as she found senior
Von McKenzie (Greenville, SC, Woodmont High School) for the game’s first goal then a few minutes fed
Anna Dailey (Clinton, SC, Clinton High School) with a nice pass as the Fleet made it 2-0. Later with the game tied 5-5, Burns scored her first of five goals with 11 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Erskine surrendered two goals to start the second half and played catch-up until midway through the second period. Burns found
Kelly Dalziel (Ocean, NJ, Ocean Township High School) on a cut to the net, who beat the LMC goalkeeper to give Erskine back the lead at 10-9. A few minutes later, Burns put the Fleet up by two with her fourth goal. Erskine never trailed again and won the game 13 to 11.
Burns finished with 5 goals and 3 assists to lead the Flying Fleet. Defensively, freshman
Konstandena Brown (Wilmington, NC, John T. Hoggard High School) tied a career-best with 14 saves in goal.
The win was dampened, however, by news of the death of former Erskine Lacrosse Coach, Kristie Quigley, who, along with her unborn child, were killed in a
bus accident this morning.
Erskine hosts Kutztown University this Thursday starting at 3:00 p.m.
