Box Score Due West, S.C. – After leading 8 to 2 at halftime, Erskine surrendered 11 second half goals to Newberry College losing 13 to 10 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Huggins Field.
Erskine broke a 1-1 tie midway through the first half scoring three unanswered goals in less than two minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore
Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, SC, Hilton Head Island High School) found the back of the net twice while freshman
Megan McKinley (Bluffton, SC, Bluffton High School) added the other one.
Erskine added four more goals in the final six minutes of the opening period to take an 8-2 lead into intermission. Burns scored three consecutive goals, two on free position opportunities while junior
Kelly Dalziel (Ocean, NJ, Ocean Township High School)added the last one.
Neither team scored for the first nine minutes of the second period. Newberry scored two goals to draw within four points then, with 17:19 remaining, exploded for three consecutive goals to pull within one at 8 to 7. Newberry’s Kerri Ann Barlage scored their sixth consecutive goal with 13:46 left to play.
After exchanging a goal each, Barlage put the Wolves up for good with her fourth goal of the game. Newberry won the game 13 to 10.
Burns notched a game-high six goals while
Sara Goodman (Columbia, SC, Ridgeview High School) scored two goals.
For Newberry, Barlage finished with 5 goals while Carly Marksberry had 4 goals and an assist.
Erskine travels to Banner Elk, North Carolina this Saturday to play the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
