Belmont, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet downed the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey this afternoon 6 to 3 in Conference Carolinas men’s tennis action on the Belmont Abbey campus.
After splitting #2 and #3 doubles, Erskine’s
Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) prevailed 9-7 over Conner McMann and Tom Wigley to give the Fleet an early 2-1 lead in the match.
The Fleet won the first three singles matches to finish to secure the match win. Mathewes,
Dean Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) won in straight sets. Sophomore
Robert Clarke (Due West, SC, Belton-Honea Path High School) bounced back after dropping his second set 6-2 to win a marathon tie-breaker set 11-9 for the Fleet’s final point.
Erskine (3-5) stays on the road this weekend playing King College on Friday and Lees-McRae College on Saturday.
