Wilson, N.C. – Erskine (1-4, 1-0) picked up their first win of the season with a 7-2 victory over the Bulldogs of Barton College (3-3, 2-1) in Conference Carolinas men’s tennis action at the Barton Tennis Complex.
After splitting the first two doubles matches, junior
Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and sophomore
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, USC-Lancaster) slipped past Max Leppert and Rafael Ruiz Velasco 9-8 (7-4) at #1 doubles to give the Fleet a 2-1 advantage going into the singles matches.
Erskine maintained the momentum, winning 5 of 6 singles matches. Mathewes again picked up a key point prevailing in three sets at #2 singles. Freshmen
Dean Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) rebounded after dropping their doubles match to win their singles matches in straight sets.
Aaron Twitty (West Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) won the Fleet’s last point at #6 singles.
Erskine plays Mount Olive College tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
