Poor shooting 1st half dooms Erskine to 58 to 47 loss to Pfeiffer

Box Score Due West, S.C. – A poor shooting first half doomed Erskine to a 58 to 47 loss to the Falcons of Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolina women’s basketball action at Belk Arena this afternoon.

The Fleet shot just 20% (6 of 30) as the Falcons took a ten point advantage into the locker room at intermission.   After some adjustments at half time, the Fleet shot 45% (13 of 29), including 5 of 10 from behind the arc, in the second half but could not overcome the first half deficit.

The Fleet (2-20, 1-15) failed to score on their first six possessions, misfiring on their first three and turning the ball over on the next three possessions.  Meanwhile the Falcons (18-3, 13-3) built a 7-0 lead punctuated by a 3-point basket and runner by Brittany Cox.  Freshman Tori Whittenberg (Mauldin, SC, Mauldin High School) finally broke the Fleet draught with a layup.

Pfeiffer built their lead to as many as 17 points before the Fleet made a late charge to cut the lead to ten at halftime.  Whittenberg hit one of her six 3-point shots and freshman Chandler Turner (Boiling Springs, SC, Boiling Springs High School) made a nice pass to junior Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) who laid it in with seconds remaining as the Fleet trailed 26 to 16 at halftime.

Erskine opened the second half on a 9 to 2 run to get within three points at 28 to 25.  Sophomore Tara Potter (Sherrills Ford, NC, Bandys High School) made two nice inside moves while Whittenberg nailed another 3-point shot.

Pfeiffer answered with their own run widening the lead again to double-digits which they maintained through the reminder of the game.

Whittenberg led all-scorers with 23 points, tying a season-high.  She also grabbed 6 rebounds while handing out a season-high 5 assists.  Potter contributed 10 points and pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.

Pfeiffer had three players reach double-digits led by Cox’s 17 points.  Jodie Lemons added 15 points while Christina Harvey earned a “double-double” with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Fleet go on the road next Wednesday to face in-state conference rival North Greenville University.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
