Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet stunned the Saints of Limestone College tonight 3 to 1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20) in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action at Belk Arena. With the win, Erskine evens their overall record at 5-5 and conference record at 3-3. Limestone slips to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in conference.
Freshman
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) knocked down a season-high 23 kills along with 8 digs and 5 blocks to led the Fleet in the upset victory.
Mike Michelau (Bristol, WI, Westosha Central High School) contributed 13 kills while
Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R.) had 11 kills. Setter
Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School) handed out a season-high 46 assists in addition to 14 digs.
Michael Schneck (Milwaukee, WI, Marquette University High School) led the Fleet on the back row with 15 digs.
For Limestone, Eric Zaun had 14 kills with 9 digs and Scott Warren had 10 kills.
After dropping the first set 25 to 22, Erskine found themselves quickly behind in the second set. Melendez brought the Fleet back to tie the game at 14 to 14 on a hard smash. After exchanging points, Limestone committed back-to-back attack errors to give the Fleet their first lead of the set at 17 to 15. Erskine stretched their lead to 22 to 17 behind a block by Melendez and Marks and a service ace from
Jon Fogel (Evanston, IL, North Park University). Erskine won the set 25 to 21 to tie the match at 1 to 1.
Limestone emerged from the extended break between sets to open a commanding 10 to 4 lead in the third set. Zaun led the Saint charge with two kills. The Fleet slowly crawled back into game and eventually tied it at 17 all on a joint block by sophomore
Neal Stanley (Apopka, FL, Seminole State College) and Melendez. The two teams swapped points to 23 to 23 when Kawa and Stanley slammed consecutive kills to give the Fleet the 25 to 23 comeback victory.
With the crowd fully involved in the game, Erskine ran away with the fourth and final set. Kawa knocked down 9 kills in the set.
The Fleet will travel to Pfeiffer University next Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
