Erskine loses at King 67 to 59

Fleet commit season-high 21 turnovers

Box Score Bristol, Tenn. – Erskine (12-7, 7-7) committed uncharacteristically season-high 21 turnovers in a 67 to 59 loss to King College (15-5, 10-4) tonight in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at the Student Center Complex on the King College campus.  The Fleet’s miscues resulted in 17 points for the Tornado.

Erskine scored the game’s first seven points for their largest and only lead of the game.  Freshman Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) scored the first five points on a 3-point basket followed by a runner in the paint.  Senior Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School) capped off the run with a nice inside move to put the Fleet up 7 to 0.

But King roared back scoring the game’s next 16 points with 11 points coming from Scottie Hendricks to take a 16 to 7 lead.  Erskine ended their scoring draught when junior Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) found Jake Haslam (Lithia, FL, Tampa Preparatory School) on the wing who promptly drilled a 3-point shot.   Erskine trimmed the lead back to three points but again consecutive Fleet turnovers aided another King run.  King led by ten at halftime 27 to 17.

Despite playing better in second half, the Fleet could not overcome their poor first half, losing by eight points at 67 to 59.

Erskine had three players finish in double-figures led by Sorrell’s 15 points and 5 rebounds.  Junior DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) contributed 13 points and shared game-high honors with 9 rebounds.  Perkins finished with 11 points.

King’s Logan Lyle led all scorers with 22 points as he went 5 of 11 from 3-point range.  Michael Fortune and Hendricks each had 11 points.

Prior to tonight, Erskine had committed only 21 total turnovers in the last two games.

For only the third time this season, Erskine won the battle on the boards 43 to 31, their largest differential to date.

Erskine will look to snap their two-game slide this Saturday against Pfeiffer University.  Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
