Box Score Due West, S.C. – Erskine almost pulled the stunning upset over #9 Limestone College tonight at Belk Arena, losing 57 to 50 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action.
The Fleet (2-25, 1-20) surprised the Saints early by taking a five point lead on two free throws by sophomore
Haleigh Spaulding (Ocala, FL).
Limestone used an 8-2 run over the final minutes of the opening period to take their first significant lead at 32 to 25 at intermission.
Limestone scored the second half's first ten points and eventually lengthened their lead to as many as nineteen points.
Limestone's lead slowly eroded away as the Fleet held the Saints scoreless over a five minute stretch.
Erskine's
Tori Whittenberg (Mauldin, SC, Mauldin High School) drilled her sixth 3-pointer of the game to draw within six points with 34 seconds remaining. Forced to take quick shots, Erskine misfired on their next two attempts as Limestone survived Erskine's late run to win 57 to 50.
Whittenberg led all-scorers on the night with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Sophomore
Tara Potter (Sherrills Ford, NC, Bandys High School) earned a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while junior
Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) snagged a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Fleet won the battle on the boards 59 to 40.
Maria Young led the Saints with 16 points while teammate Stephanie Hayes scored 13 points with a team-high 7 boards. Morgan Brown handed out 10 assists for the Saints.
Erskine hosts Converse College this Friday night in their final game of the 2012-2013 season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
