Box Score Due West, S.C. – Senior
Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Northern Kentucky University) added another piece to his Erskine legacy leading Erskine to a stunning 84 to 68 win over #4 regionally ranked Barton College tonight in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Belk Arena.\\
On Senior Night, Sorrell fired up the crowd by scoring two of the Fleet’s first three baskets and igniting a 21-8 run to open the game. Freshman
Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) also hit three of his four 3-point baskets to the delight of the home crowd.
After calling two timeouts in a three minute span, Barton Head Coach Ron Lievense put his team on a 20 to 6 run that ended with their first lead late in the opening period at 28 to 27 on a 12 foot jumper by Keith Manley.
Erskine scored the final two baskets of the half, including a nice runner in the lane by junior point guard
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Western Kentucky University) just before the buzzer, to take a 31 to 28 lead into the locker room.
Erskine opened the second half on a 14 to 2 run punctuated by an old-fashion three-point by Gabbard. The closest Barton got after that was nine points as Erskine shot an impressive 75% (15 of 20) from the field in the second half.
For the Fleet, Sorrell scored a game-high 24 points and is now just 20 points shy of 1,000 points in his Erskine career. Gabbard filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, a team-high 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Perkins finished with 16 points while
DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC) had 10 points along with 6 steals.
Both Chris Flemming and Zach Faircloth came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs with 13 points each.
Erskine (17-8, 11-8) has now won three in a row and five of their last six games.
The loss by Barton drops them into a tie with Limestone College for first place in the conference standings.
Erskine will look to down their second conference-leading opponent this Tuesday when the Saints of Limestone College visit Belk Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
