Newberry, S.C. – Erskine lost to local rival Newberry 8-1 in non-conference men’s tennis action at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
After winning at #1 and #3 doubles, Newberry took a commanding lead in the match when Cal Loveridge and Carlos Nicolopulos edged
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) and
Dean Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) 8-6 at #2 doubles.
In the singles matches, Newberry won 5 of the 6, despite some gutty-play by
Jack West (Belton, SC, Emerald High School) and Harris at #1 and #3 singles respectively. West lost his match 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 while Harris lost 12-10 in the third tie-breaker set. Senior
Matthew Twitty (West Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at #6 singles for the Fleet’s lone point.
Erskine opens conference play at home this Saturday against Pfeiffer University. The match is set to start at noon. Admission is free to all home Erskine tennis matches.
