Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – After trimming the lead to three points in the second half, Erskine faded down the stretch, losing to conference foe Queens University 65 to 46 in women’s basketball action at the Grady Cole Center.
Queens University (13-9, 11-7) used two 7-0 runs to stake themselves at a twelve point lead at intermission. Queens’ Melissa Thomas hit a 3-point shot to break a 10-10 tie and ignite the first 7-0 Royals run. Erskine crept back to within four points after a 3-point basket by Lindsey Weidenaar and a short jumper by Jana Dixon but the Royals forced three consecutive Fleet turnovers to score seven unanswered points to close out the half.
Erskine (2-22, 1-17) opened the second half with an 11-2 run to cut the Queens lead to three points. Weidenaar hit a jumper followed by a 3-point basket by teammate Tori Whittenberg. After a steal by Whittenberg on the Royals’ ensuing possession, Weidenaar nailed her second three-pointer of the game forcing Queens Coach Cheryl Nix to call timeout. Queens’ emerged from their timeout and outscored the Fleet 19 to 4 to win the game going away 65 to 46.
Whittenberg and Weidenaar led the Flying Fleet with 12 points each. Junior Jana Dixon pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and scored 8 points.
Queens was led by Shonice Pettaway’s 27 points and 7 rebounds. Thomas and Nikia Squire both contributed 12 points each.
Erskine returns home for their final four games of the season. On Wednesday the Flying Fleet host the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
