Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – Erskine let tonight’s road game slip away, losing 60-59 to Queens University at the Grady Cole Center.
Trailing by one early in the first half, Erskine’s Roderick Perkins sparked a 10-2 run to give the Fleet a seven point lead. Perkins drilled a 3-point basket from the corner then fed a nice pass to junior Mike Gabbard on a cut to the basket for a layup. Perkins then stole the ball on the Royals next possession and raced down the court for a dunk. After a basket by Queens’ Brandon Nichols, Perkins hit another 3-point shot to put the Fleet up 17 to 10.
Queens slowly grinded their way back, eventually tying the game with just over five minutes left at 20-20 on a layup by David Mason.
Neither team gained a significant lead over the half’s last five minutes with the Fleet holding a two point advantage at 34-32 at intermission.
In the second half, Erskine quickly jumped out to a thirteen point lead highlighted by two 3-point baskets from Jake Haslam. But the Fleet could not hold the lead as they misfired and turned the ball over on their next eight possessions allowing Queens to crawl back into the game. Queens’ Joby Glymph tied the game at 49-49 on a pair of free throws with a little over five minutes left.
The lead exchanged hands three more times until Nichols hit his only 3-point basket of the game to put Queens on top at 60-59. The Fleet had two more chances but could not get either shot to fall.
Senior Corey Sorrell led the Fleet with a game-high 23 points and 8 rebounds. Perkins finished with 15 points while Gabbard had 10 points and 9 assists.
The Royals were led by Glymph’s 19 points while Antonio Stabler had 16 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.
