Pfeiffer edges Erskine 3-1

Box Score Misenheimer, N.C. – Looking for their third straight conference win, the Flying Fleet lost to the Falcons of Pfeiffer University 3 to 1 (25-21, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20) tonight  in men’s volleyball action at Merner Gym.

Falcons, currently second in the conference standings, edged the Fleet in the first two sets.  In both sets, Erskine was within two points late.  In the first set, Erskine’s Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) crushed a kill to make the score 23 to 21 but Pfeiffer got back-to-back kills from Eric Edelman to win the set 25 to 21.  Again in the second set, Pfeiffer’s Edelman put down their last two points to win the set 25 to 22.  Erskine’s Mike Michelau (Bristol, WI, Westosha Central High School) and Kawa blocked the Pfeiffer attack to get the Fleet within a point.  But after a Fleet error, Edelman knocked down his two kills around a Pfeiffer service error.

Erskine fought off game point at 24 to 23 to score the next three points to win the set 26 to 24.  Kawa drilled a kill to tie the game and freshman Andrew Davis (Asheville, NC, Clyde A. Erwin High School) served an ace to give the Fleet their first lead of the set since the opening point.  Pfeiffer committed an error on their next attack to give the Fleet the 26 to 24 victory.

Pfeiffer controlled the fourth set from beginning to end.  With the score 7 to 6, Pfeiffer snatched the next four points to take an 11 to 6 lead.  The Falcons extended their lead to eight points at one point before settling with the five point victory at 25 to 20.

Erskine slips to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in conference while Pfeiffer stays within a game of conference leading Mount Olive College at 8-3 overall and 7-1 in conference.

Michelau led the Fleet with a game-high 17 kills while Kawa and Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R.) both had 11 kills each.

Edelman finished with 13 kills to pace the Falcons while Caleb Brothy had 10 kills.  Joe Supko had an impressive 7 blocks to help Pfeiffer control the net.

Erskine returns home this Saturday to face the Trojans of Mount Olive College.  First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
