Box Score Wilson, N.C. – Shooting a season-high 53% from the floor, the Erskine Flying Fleet (3-4, 1-1) stunned preseason conference favorite the Bulldogs of Barton College (4-5, 1-1) tonight 92 to 88 at Wilson Gymnasium.
Despite shooting an impressive 47% from the floor in the first half, Erskine still found themselves down 50 to 42 at intermission as Barton was even hotter from the floor, hitting 16 of 29 and was a perfect 14 of 14 from the charity stripe.
In the second half, Erskine quickly erased the Barton lead by scoring the half's first seven points, highlighted by a steal by
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) who passed it ahead to
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) for easy bucket. Hendrix, who leads the conference in steals, had a game-high 5 steals.
The lead exchanged hands five more times until Hendrix stole the ball and scored with just a little under three minutes remaining. Barton got within two points in the final minute but Giles made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to ice the game.
Erskine missed just 14 shots in the second half, going an astonishing 20 for 34 from the floor.
Erskine had six players finish in double-digits led by Giles' 17 points. Junior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) earned her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman
Marnasha Eugene (Lithonia, GA, Stephenson High School) contributed 16 points while fellow freshman
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) had 10 points. Junior
Andrienne Bannerman (Wilmington, NC, Pender High School) and senior
Rosa Powell (Lilburn, GA, Brookwood High School) came off the bench to contribute 14 and 10 points respectively.
The point guard duo of Hendrix and
Haleigh Spaulding (Ocala, FL, Vanguard High School) combined for 12 assists with just 4 turnovers. As a team, Erskine handed out a season-high 21 assists on the night while committing a season-low 12 turnovers.
Barton's Nyeshea Willie led all scorers with 26 points. Both Brianna Thomas and Cassandra Brown finished double-doubles with Thomas scoring 18 points with 15 rebounds while Brown had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Erskine will wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule next Saturday against Claflin University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
