Erskine waltzes to 28 point victory in Classic finale

Box Score Due West, S.C. – Erskine waltzed to a 75 to 47 victory over Toccoa Falls College in the final game of the inaugural Red Myers Classic hosted by Erskine College at Belk Arena.

Toccoa Falls (0-5) scored the last five points of the opening period to trim an 8 point Fleet lead to just three at intermission.  The Eagles' Nathan Palmer nailed a three-point shot and teammate Donovan Smith hit an open jumper to cut the Fleet lead to 33 to 30 at halftime.

The Flying Fleet (3-2) turned up their defensive intensity in the second half, limiting the Eagles to just 17 second half points.  The Fleet held the Eagles to just 5 of 19 from the floor, including 0 for 10 from three point range.

Offensively, senior Chris Gore (Myrtle Beach, SC, Myrtle Beach High School) earned his first double-double of the season with a new career-high 16 rebounds and 10 points.  In the Classic, Gore pulled down 31 rebounds in the two games.

The Eagles were led by Jon Sauls' 12 points while teammate Devian Clark had 11 points.

After playing three games in four days, the Fleet do not play again until next Saturday when Livingstone College visits Belk Arena.  This game was originally scheduled to be played at Livingstone but was recently moved to Due West.  Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.

In the earlier game tonight, North Greenville University (2-2) pounded Johnson University (0-6) 93 to 65.  The Crusaders had three players score in double-figures, led by Chris Dean's 18 points.  Teammate Keith Johnson turned in a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.  Micah Parker added 12 points.

The Royals' Louis Allen led all-scorers with 20 points.  He also had a team-high 7 rebounds.  Teammate Sean Finneran knocked down 5 three-point shots to finish with 18 points while Jordon McClendon had 10 points.

Both Erskine and North Greenville went 2-0 in the Classic.

The Red Myers Classic is named in honor of the late legendary Erskine coach Red Myers, who passed away earlier this spring.  Coach Myers is the all-time winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 413 wins.  His former players and friends donated the funds to make the Classic a possibility.
