Box Score Due West, S.C. – Erskine goalkeeper
Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio), who already stopped one penalty kick, could not repeat the heroics as #1 Erskine (12-6-2) fell 2 to 1 to #2 Limestone College (15-3) this afternoon in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament Game at Huggins Field.
After a hand ball in the box was called on the Fleet, De La Vina stopped Larry Mahon's penalty kick. Limestone's Jack Bailey blasted the rebound back and De La Vina lept to his feet to block that shot too.
Unfortunately just six minutes later, De La Vina was asked to do it again. Limestone's Benjamin Morande converted this time to give the Saints the 2 to 1 lead.
Erskine's
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) scored the game's first goal on an amazing bicycle kick that entered the goal in the upper right corner.
Limestone tied the game a short time later off a corner kick. Calvin Bond's kick was redirected on the backside by Larry Mahon just inside the far post.
Erskine had a chance to take the lead in the 72
nd minute but Settlemire's shot was kicked away by Mahon.
The game remained scoreless until Morande's penalty kick in the 86
th minute.
For his efforts, Mahon was named the tournament most outstanding player. Joining him on the All-Tournament team were teammates Sam Orritt, Jack Bailey, Jorge Mackenna, and Thomas Metzemaekers.
For the Flying Fleet, De La Vina, Settlemire, and
Dimitri Minick (Orange Park, FL, Orange Park High School) earned All-Tournament honors.
Barton's Ricardo Oliveira and Pfeiffer's Nathan Regis also earned the honors.
