Box Score Due West, S.C. – Playing before a sparse crowd due to the school's fall break, Erskine took care of business drilling last place Mt. Olive College 4-1 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action at Huggins Field.
With the win, Erskine (8-4-1, 5-0) extends their win streak to five games and remains perfect in conference play.
Erskine received an early wake-up call when Mt. Olive tallied the game's first goal in the thirteenth minute. Erskine broke down defensively putting Bright Eto in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Eto flicked the ball past the charging
Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) into the lower right corner to put the Trojans up 1-0.
Finding themselves trailing the last place team, Erskine picked up the pace of the game and tied the game seven minutes later on a penalty kick. The Mt. Olive goalkeeper Aleksandar Drobac made a phenomenon save on Jonathan Rutter's penalty kick but the referee ruled that he had left his line before the shot. Rutter's next shot was perfectly placed in the upper left corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Over the next fifteen minutes of play, Mt. Olive College had two players sent off for penalties, giving the Fleet a two player advantage. The Fleet failed to capitalize on that advantage before intermission.
With the two-man advantage, the Fleet exploded for three goals in the second half. Erskine's
Jack Power (Westcliff-On-Sea, Essex, England, The King John High School) scored the game-winning in the 59
th minute off a short pass from teammate
Victor Nirennold (Rennes, France, Lycee Emile Zola) at the top of the box. For Power, it was his second goal in as many games and his first career game-winning goal. Earlier this week, Power had scored the game-tying goal against Lees-McRae that sent the game into overtime that the Fleet later won.
Erskine notched two more goals, the first coming off a free kick by
Ross Henderson (Lincoln, England, William Farr C of E)and the other by
Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School). For Settlemire, it was his conference-leading 11
th goal of the season.
Erskine will step out of conference play to travel to the UNC-Pembroke next Wednesday. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
