Haslam and Perkins heroes in 82-76 OT win over Pfeiffer

Box Score Misenheimer, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (7-2, 3-2) overcame a 6 point halftime deficit to win in overtime 82 to 76 over conference foe Pfeiffer University (2-8, 1-3) in men’s basketball action at Merner Gym.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, junior Jake Haslam (Lithia, FL, Tampa Preparatory School) hit the biggest shot of his career thus far, drilling a 3-point basket, to tie the game at 68 to 68.  Freshman standout Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) then blocked Pfeiffer’s next two shots to give the Fleet an opportunity to win at the buzzer.  Unfortunately, his shot was off the mark sending the game into overtime.

Fueled by the closing minute heroics, Erskine dominated the overtime period scoring the extra period’s first ten points to seal the 82 to 76 victory.

For the Fleet, it is their second overtime victory in five days, both on the road.

Perkins led all-scorers with a career-high 24 points and a co-team-high 6 rebounds.  Haslam scored 21 points on 7 of 12 from 3-point range.  DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) and Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School) contributed 13 and 11 points respectively.  Junior point guard Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) finished with a season-high 11 assists with just two turnovers along with 9 points.

For the Falcons, Josh Humphrey recorded a “double-double” with 23 points and game-high 10 rebounds.  Tayron Gibson came off the bench to contribute 16 points and Matt Ellwood finished with 12 points.

After playing three road games in five days, the Fleet return home for two games next week.  On Wednesday, Erskine hosts conference-leading King College starting at 7:30 p.m.  On Saturday, Erskine welcomes Belmont Abbey to Belk Arena.  Erskine defeated Belmont Abbey back in November 84 to 82
