Box Score Hartsville, S.C. – The Coker College Cobras used a 10-0 run midway through the opening half to slide past the Erskine Flying Fleet 61 to 49 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Timberlake-Lawton Gym.
Following a free throw by senior
Sha'Niqua Whitley (Columbia, SC, Ridge View High School) to cut the Coker lead to one at 16 to 15, Coker (8-3, 4-1) scored ten unanswered points over the next two minutes that the Fleet (0-9, 0-4) would not overcome. Hailey Yohn and Amber Yau hit back-to-back three point shots as Coker capitalized on two Erskine turnovers.
The Fleet trimmed the lead back to single-digits scoring the last seven points of the half to trail by eight points, 32 to 24, at halftime. Freshman
Tori Whittenberg (Mauldin, SC, Mauldin High School) started the run with a 3-point basket followed by lay-ups by junior
Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) and sophomore
Andrienne Bannerman (Watha, NC, Pender High School).
Coker scored the first two baskets of the second half to extend their lead back to double-digits as the Fleet could draw no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Bannerman posted a game-high 18 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Flying Fleet. Whitely also finished in double-digits with 10 points along with 7 rebounds. Dixon led the Fleet on the boards with 8 rebounds.
The Cobras featured a balanced attack with 3 players reaching double-digits while 8 different players scored. Lau led the Cobras with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Priscilla Fenty earned a “double-double” with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Angie Lawrence also had 13 points for the Cobras.
Erskine travels to Pfeiffer University this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
