#15 Barton tops Erskine 76 to 68; snaps Fleet's 3-game win streak

Box Score Wilson, N.C. – Conference-leading Barton used home-court to snap Erskine’s three game winning streak, topping the Fleet 76 to 68 tonight in men’s basketball action at Wilson Gymnasium.

Erskine (11-5, 7-5) opened the game scoring the first four points on a jump shot by junior Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) and a layup by junior DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School).  Erskine took their largest lead right before half on two free throws by senior Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School).  Barton’s Gerald Boston drilled a pull-up 3-point shot with 11 seconds left to cut the Fleet lead in half at 38 to 35 going into the locker room.

Barton (14-2, 9-1) recaptured the lead midway through the second half on a 3-point basket by Chris Flemming to make the score 53 to 51.  Barton eventually extended their lead to seven points, capped by Boston’s jumper, forcing Erskine Head Coach Mark Peeler to call timeout.  Emerging from the timeout, Erskine responded scoring seven answered points.  Hall nailed a 3-point shot and after stopping Barton on their next two possessions, Erskine tied the game at 61 to 61 on a layup by Sorrell and a pull-up jumper by Gabbard.  Barton’s Flemming hit his fourth 3-point shot of the game and Barton never trailed again although the contest was not decided until the final minute of play.  Down the stretch, the Bulldogs went 4 for 4 from the charity stripe and Jon Hart raced down the court after an Erskine miss for a layup with two seconds left.

Hall led the Fleet scoring a game-high 23 points and 9 rebounds.   Sorrell added 17 points while Gabbard finished with 14 points and 6 assists.

Boston and Flemming led the Bulldogs with 22 points each.  Jon Hart contributed 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Erskine plays their third consecutive road game this Tuesday against non-conference foe Allen University.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
