Mount Olive overwhelms young Fleet team 66 to 42

Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet lost to the Trojans of Mount Olive College this afternoon 66 to 42 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Belk Arena.

The Trojans (11-3, 7-3) shot an impressive 50% from the floor in the first half to take commanding 42 to 21 lead at halftime.  Tara Nesmith and Kirksten Mitchell both scored 14 points to lead the Trojan charge.

The young Fleet team struggled against the veteran Trojans.  The Trojans forced 13 Fleet turnovers, including 7 off steals, while holding Erskine to 7 of 29 shooting (29%).

The Fleet played much better defensively in the second half holding the Trojans to just 7 of 26 from the field, including 0 for 8 from 3-point territory.  Unfortunately, the Fleet had no answer offensively and could not cut into the  Trojan lead.

Freshman Tori Whittenberg (Mauldin, SC, Mauldin High School) tallied 12 points along with 5 steals to lead the Fleet.  Junior Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and contributed 8 points.

Nesmith finished with a “double-double,” scoring a co-game-high 21 points with 10 rebounds.  Mitchell also had 21 points while Jasmine McDonald contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds.  She also had a game-high 7 steals on the day.

Erskine hosts the Crusaders of North Greenville University this Monday.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
