Box Score Mt. Olive, N.C. – Erskine suffered their first loss of the season this afternoon as the Trojans of Mt. Olive College swept the Flying Fleet in straight sets (21-25, 20-25, 19-25) in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action at Kornegay Arena.
The Trojans (4-0, 3-0), the conference’s preseason favorite, controlled the net posting a season-best 10.5 blocks while hitting at .405 clip. Erskine (2-1, 1-1) managed just 3 blocks and was held to .167 hitting percentage.
The Fleet staged a valiant comeback in the first set. Trailing 14 to 21, Erskine scored 6 of the next seven points, including five consecutive points at one point.
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School) started the run with a service ace and tallied the last point of the run with a thunderous spike. Unfortunately, the Trojans held off the Fleet to win the opening set 25 to 21.
Mount Olive opened the second set scoring five of the first six points. But the Fleet again rallied to take a 12-9 lead, highlighted by two kills by sophomore
Neal Stanley (Apopka, FL). The Trojans rebounded to tie the game at 14-14 on a kill by Angel Dache and took a four point lead late with block followed by a kill by Richard Hesse. Mount Olive won the second set 25 to 20.
It was late in the third set when Mount Olive broke an 18 to 18 tie with a 7-1 run to win the set 25 to 19 and the match 3 to 0. The run was punctuated by Trojan service aces.
Freshman
Mike Michelau (Bristol, WI, Central Westasha High School) continued his impressive play recording a game-high 16 kills for the Flying Fleet while Neal Stanley had a game-high 8 digs.
Adam Miracle led the Trojans attack with 10 kills along with a team-best 5 digs.
Erskine travels to Emmanuel College this Tuesday. Erskine defeated Emmanuel 3-0 to open their season last week. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
