Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine won their second game in as many days drilling the Trojans of Mount Olive College 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, and 25-18) in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena.
After squandering an early lead, Erskine tightened their defense to win the first set 25-23. Trailing late 18 to 20, the Fleet exchanged points with Mount Olive until senior
Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) scored a quick hit from her setter position to tie the game at 23 to 23. On the ensuing rally, senior
Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School) and freshman
Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School) blocked the Trojans’ attack and Stewart knocked down the kill on the Fleet’s next possession to win the set 25-23.
Erskine used their defense to ignite their attack. Trailing 3 to 6 early, Sullivan had back-to-back blocks and Stewart put down one of six kills in the set to tie the match. Erskine stretched their lead to as many as seven before Stewart iced the five point victory at 25-20.
Erskine continued the offensive surge throughout the third set. The Trojans mounted a small rally to close within two points at 14-12 but Chabra again scored a kill on a quick tip over the net to stop the Trojan run. The Fleet responded with a 7-2 run, punctured by two kills by senior
Alicia Bragg (Rock Hill, SC, Rock Hill High School). Bragg had five kills in the set to pace the Fleet.
Erskine featured a balance attack with Bullock and Stewart having a team-high 9 kills while Chabra and Bragg both had 8 kills. Chabra also had 27 assists and 10 digs to earn a famed “double-double” for the match.
Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) finished with a game-high 14 digs.
The Trojans’ Carly White had a game-high 12 kills and Nicole Karas had 18 assists and a co-team-high 7 digs.
With the win, Erskine now stands at 2-5 overall but is 2-0 in conference. The loss evens Mount Olive College’s record at 5-5 and 1-1 in conference.
Erskine hosts Queens University this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Queens but their new gymnasium is not quite ready for use. Admission is free to all home Erskine volleyball games.
